CHAPTER 28
ETHAN
Itâs been four days, and I canât stop thinking about Mikayla. Sheâs in my head night and day. And yeah, itâs driving me crazy.
Sunday was one of the best days Iâve ever had.
All we did was watch movies, play cards, and talk while time disappeared. No big deal. But Iâve never done that with a girl before, and it was epic.
It was epic because it was Mikayla.
Sheâs not just hot, sheâs awesome.
Checking my phone, I grin at her latest string of emojis. Yeah, weâre still playing that game, and Iâve worked out that sheâs telling me good luck for tonight. She said she was coming. I have no idea where sheâll be sitting, but Iâll be looking out for her.
âOkay, boys, letâs go! Five minutes!â Coach is clapping his hands, and I shove my phone in my locker, slapping it closed and trying to shake Mikayla from my mind.
I need to focus.
First game of the season. Itâs only an exhibition one, but in my mind, it still counts. Weâve got to come out strong, show weâre a contender this year. I want to win, and I want to win good.
Stamping my skates on the ground, I grab my stick and thump it against my chest, closing my eyes and going through my usual pregame ritual. Iâve been doing it since I was six, when I joined my first team and my dad coached us.
Heâs given so much to me and this game. Itâs his heart and passion that inspired me, his devotion that kept me skating when I got bored during my tweens. He kept pushing and dragged me into high school hockey, where his desire became my own. I owe him so much.
Heâs here tonight. He drives up from Denver whenever he can, and I know heâll be watching me with pride. And so will Mom. The idea makes me smile, as does the thought that no matter how I play, Dad always finds a way to make me feel like I did all right. Even when I puck upâas he likes to call itâheâll be there with words of advice or comfort.
Iâm his star player, and I want to make him proud.
Which is why I canât go fucking up on this bet. I canât sleep with Mikayla yet.
I canât risk having to walk around campus naked. I canât risk getting arrested or kicked off the team for acting like a douche nugget.
Which means I should probably stop texting Mikayla, thinking about her, hanging out with her.
If she wasnât so fun to be around, this would be a hell of a lot easier. Why do I have to find her so attractive? Iâd love to just slip into the friend zone with her. Itâd be awesome. But one look into those eyes and Iâm done for. Those lips of hersâIâve tasted them now, felt them around my cock. Thereâs no way I can be just friends with this girl. The scary thing is Iâd like to be more.
Sheâs not a quick fuck.
